Meet the Coalition: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.
It’s My City has been fortunate enough to have incredible coalition members join our cause. One of those members is Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.
Founded in 1976, then the Indianapolis Clean City Committee commissioned by Mayor Hudnut, KIB has been working to create a clean and beautiful Indianapolis for over 40 years.
Now, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization with a mission to engage diverse communities to create vibrant public places, helping people and nature thrive. In 2016, KIB worked with more than 20,000 volunteers on over 890 community projects.
When approached to join the It’s My City campaign, KIB jumped at the chance. KIB’s mission to help both the people of Indianapolis and their places of nature thrive aligns with key IMC values. However going beyond the surface goals of IMC and KIB, both want to instill pride in Indianapolis in it’s residents.
Dave Forsell, president of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, feels “KIB is in the business not only of creating cleaner and green environments, but also making them livelier, healthier, more diverse, more distinctive, and more loved.” He adds that the “human landscape” is connected to the health of their local, natural world. In his eyes, KIB’s work helps communities to be “happier, healthier, safer, more involved, more proud, more connected, and more capable.”
It’s My City has three goals for Indianapolis, to become more clean, green, and beautiful. Consequently, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful has eight with a shared few: cleaner, greener, more beautiful, more biodiverse, happier, healthier, more capable, and more connected. These goals are more than talk, they’re being put into action as you read this. And you can be apart of it. Getting involved with IMC and KIB is a great way to help reach our goals and those of our coalition member, too.
But remember! Keeping our city clean, beautiful, and green is about more than picking up litter and organizing cleanups (although without those, it would be impossible to meet our goal!). It’s about making a better Indianapolis. And it’s for these reasons Keep Indianapolis Beautiful decided to join It’s My City.
